Are You a Frog in the Kettle?

In the 19th century, scientists performed many experiments about a “frog in a kettle.” They concluded that if a frog is dropped into a kettle of boiling water, it will immediately jump out because of the pain. But if the frog is placed in a kettle with water at room temperature, and if the water is heated very slowly over time, the frog will not feel the heat in time to avoid being boiled to death. However, modern scientists have conducted similar experiments and have concluded that the “boiling frog” premise is false.

Whether the “frog in the kettle” premise is true or not, it is applicable to the culture, including the Christian culture. I’ve known many Christians, even those strong in the faith, who after being “immersed” long enough in churches that are not true to Biblical doctrine, worship and practice, eventually get “boiled” into false kinds of so-called “Christianity.” One of these kinds of false “Christianity” is liberal theology that debunk the Bible as the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of God. For example, a liberal professor teaches that Genesis was only partially written by Moses, because his book was rewritten by people 500 years later during the reigns of David and Solomon to justify the existence of Israel as a favored nation over the surrounding nations,

The book of Genesis was written during the period of the monarchy… for the purpose of setting up and defending the very idea of a monarchy… [The Genesis stories] were recast and shaped into their present form during the monarchic period for the purpose of explaining and defending the present (emphasis added).

And many so-called “Christians” are amazed at this professor’s new “insights” into the Bible. They are frogs in the kettle who are being cooked into spiritual death by liberalism.

Another teaching that has deceived millions around the world is the health and wealth, “name it and claim it” prosperity “gospel” popular among TV “Christians.” Some people, when they first hear of this heresy, are horrified that such poison can be popular in the churches. But there are many who, even after their churches were assimilated into this false gospel, stayed for convenience, friendship, tradition or money. Maybe they’re even hoping that their churches would repent.

Be forewarned: you might be frogs in the kettle who are being cooked into spiritual death by the G12 (or D12, E12, or other deceitful variation) cult. You are in danger of abandoning the true gospel, if you haven’t already done so. Michael Horton points this out in his article, “How Far is Too Far?”

There are many such churches where the gospel is not being faithfully preached and the sacraments are not being properly administered. Sure, there may be true believers among them. Yet they are in spiritual danger. Soon they will realize either that their faith in Christ is being challenged and will therefore seek a true church or, like the frog in the kettle, they may remain as their profession of faith is increasingly confused, weakened, and perhaps even abandoned (emphasis added). ~ Michael Horton

This reminds me of Psalm 1:1:

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers.

If this is read in the opposite form, it would be:

Cursed is the man
who walks in the counsel of the wicked,
stands in the way of sinners,
and sits in the seat of scoffers.

Did you notice the progression to more and more sinfulness here? At first, the wicked man only walks with his fellow wicked who gives him ungodly counsel. Later, he stands on the road, waiting and looking for sinners so he may join them in their wicked behavior. Then at last, the wickedness is completed as he sits among the scoffers, mocking the righteous, and plotting evil against God’s people. So Jeremiah says, “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord” (Jer 17:5).
