interfaith… Buddhist, New Age, or Hindu “Christianity”?

The latest Pew Forum survey found out that American Christianity is closer to the above than Christ-ianity. Here are some “surprising” (really?) findings:

  • Nearly half say they have had a religious or mystical experience, “a “moment of sudden religious insight or awakening.”
  • Roughly 1 in 4 “Christians” say they believe in reincarnation, yoga as a spiritual practice,  spiritual energy in things like mountains, trees and crystals, and astrology.
  • About 30 percent say they have felt in touch with someone who’s dead, and about 20 percent have experienced ghosts.

Another confirmation of what Scott Clark calls the “Quest for Illegitimate Religious Experience”: the evangelical emphasis on unmediated “encounter” with God, which is  nothing more than anti-Scripturalism cloaked in a stew of mysticism, Pentecostalism, anti-doctrinalism, and Gnosticism.
