Confession of Sin

Responsive Reading of the Law and the Psalms (Exo 20:1-17; Psa 119:1-8):

Minister: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.

People: Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep your law.

M: You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything in heaven and on earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them.

P: Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!

M: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

P: Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,

M: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

P: who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!

M: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

P: You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.

M: You shall not murder.

P: Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!

M: You shall not commit adultery.

P: Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.

M: You shall not steal.

P: I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules.

M: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

P: I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!

M: You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor’s.

ALL: Lord, have mercy upon us, and write your law in our hearts.

General Confession

Our Father, we are sinful and you are holy. We recognize that we have heard in your Law hard words, knowing how often we have offended you in thought, word and deed, not only by obvious violations, but by failing to conform to its perfect commands, by what we have done and by what we have not done. There is nothing in us that gives us hope, because our hearts are filled with the love of the world. Our minds are dark and are attacked by doubts; our wills are too often selfish, and our bodies are prone to laziness and sinful desires. By sinning against our neighbors, in whose image they were created, we have also sinned against you. In this time of silent confession we bring you our particular sins. [Silent prayer]. Amen.
