Calvin: footwashing a “display of buffoonery”

April 4, 2009

If the Roman Catholics have their crucifixion reenactment, and Jews have their Passover Seder meal, evangelicals have their footwashing ceremony. This week, I have seen footwashing ceremonies being promoted by a couple of big evangelical churches here in the Metro Manila area. Did Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, really command us to perform an annual footwashing ceremony?

Not all Reformed are from the Reformers

If you hear about the World Communion of Reformed Churches, or worse – if you get invited to affiliate with them – caveat emptor!

The Gospel According to the Nazirite

March 25, 2009

Although Jesus did not take the Nazirite vows, he fulfilled what their vows foreshadowed: complete separation from sin and consecration to God. Jesus the Nazarene became our last Nazirite because those who believe and trust in him will never be required to fulfill Nazirite vows or any vows of good works for their salvation.

“How Do I Read the Book of Revelation?”

“How Do I Read the Book of Revelation?”

In Revelation 9:1-11 we read of locusts that come out of the abyss. If we try to over-interpret, we’ll end up saying these are Apache helicopters, with the teeth being .50 caliber machine guns, the hair being the fire out of the exhaust pipe, the breast-plates being the titanium armor, and the tails being tomahawk missiles. This misses the point entirely as this vision had meaning for the first-century believer.

This paedo wonders about Peter and the Jewish convert

March 21, 2009

Reacting to a post by Mark Dever, pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., Dr. Scott Clark of Westminster Seminary says that he is not offended by Dever's assertion that the presbyterians' practice of infant baptism is "a sinful (though sincere) error."

“Hexegesis” – The Philippines in the Bible?

March 14, 2009

I happened to listen to a shocking tidbit that proudly said, “Do you know that the Philippines is in the Bible?” Then it quoted Isaiah 24:15. How does the Philippines figure in this verse?

“The Coming Evangelical Collapse”

March 12, 2009

The Internet Monk writes, "We are on the verge – within 10 years – of a major collapse of evangelical Christianity... We Evangelicals have failed to pass on to our young people an orthodox form of faith that can take root and survive the secular onslaught. The billions of dollars we've spent on youth ministers, Christian music, publishing, and media has produced... young Christians who know next to nothing about their own faith except how they feel about it."

“Christian” youth (and adults) are Biblical idiots

March 11, 2009

Two recent surveys again confirm what we already know: the current Biblical illiteracy in the church. What are our church youth getting fed? Simply, junk such as fun and games, delirious, frenzied, ecstatic, mind-numbing noise as "praise and worship," and moralistic, therapeutic homilies as "sermons."

Dr. R. Scott Clark, Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Westminster Seminary in California, explains why the "Israel of God" is not national Israel, but the elect of God from all nations, Jews and Gentiles alike.

Who’s Out, Who’s In

March 7, 2009

The one who had no blemish or defilement, who was perfectly obedient, and who was eternally faithful became our defilement, our rebellion, and our unfaithfulness to be offered as a sacrifice for our sake on the cross.

“New Song” and American Idol(atry)

“New Song” and American Idol(atry)

I've watched a few episodes of American Idol the last few weeks, especially the Final 36 competition. The three songs that I remember most were "oldies": one from the 80s and two from the 60s. Two of the songs, "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" (1966) and "Bette Davis Eyes" (1981), were deemed "too old-fashioned." Read more and watch the videos too.
