Do not fear when others proclaim the end of the world is near, because of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan and the war in Libya. All of these are part of God’s unshakable plan for the eventual redemption of his elect from sin, death, and Satan. As David says, “I shall not be shaken†because the Lord “gives me counsel … [and] he is at my right hand†(Psa 16:7-8).
Tens of thousands of people in the Metro Manila area and several provinces suffered in the onslaught of record rainfall from Storm Ketsana. God has encouraging words for them as well as those of us who were not affected much by the storm. Psalm 46 is one chapter that assures and quiets our souls, especially in times of great distress such as this.
Christians will surely ask the age-old question, “Why do these things happen?” “Is God in control of these disasters?” After the earthquake-tsunami disaster in Indonesia and south Asia in 2004, I wrote an article for Reformed Perspective magazine entitled, “Who Sent the Earthquake and the Tsunami?” in wrestling with questions about evil and suffering in the world.
